Perineal Urethrostomy in Cats

Audrain Veterinary Clinic is pleased to be able to offer our patients PU surgery as an option for saving your cats life in the event they suffer a urethral blockage.

“PU” or Perineal Uretherostomy is a surgical procedure to relieve a urethral blockage by widening the opening of the urethra. This blockage can be life threatening and requires emergency assistance.   Male cats are more at risk for developing a urinary blockage than female cats based on their anatomy.

When a urinary blockage forms, not only is it very painful, but can very quickly become life threatening. The inability to urinate causes toxins to build up in the body, causing the patient to become very ill and putting their bladder at risk for rupture.

You will want to monitor your cat after having PU surgery for signs of a Urinary Tract Infections or UTIs, as the risk for these may increase after surgery.
