euthanasia for your pet

Compassionate Pet Euthanasia

Euthanasia is something we would rather not think about; unfortunately, pets grow old and may become ill. Pet euthanasia may be the most humane alternative for helping your pet when your pet appears to be suffering.

Understanding When It's appropriate

Pet owners normally struggle to determine when to say goodbye to their beloved pets, especially if their pet has good and bad days. If you are unsure whether it’s an appropriate time, Audrain Veterinary Clinic can evaluate your pet’s current condition and answer your questions to help you make this critical decision.

Some more common situations are:

  1. Your pet is in chronic pain that cannot be alleviated with medication or other treatments

  2. Your pet has stopped eating and/or lost a significant amount of weight not related to a change in diet

  3. Your pet is experiencing chronic vomiting and diarrhea that cannot be controlled through medication

  4. Your pet’s activity levels have dropped significantly

  5. Your pet can no longer stand or walk on its own or only with severe pain and discomfort

In-Office Pet Euthanasia

Audrain Veterinary Clinic can help make your pet’s final car ride more comfortable by providing you with a sedative that you can give your pet before arriving at our veterinary office. This will help your pet to be comfortable for the journey and should help reduce their stress level and anxiety.

Once you arrive at the clinic, you can choose how involved you wish to be in your pet’s final moments. If you wish to stay with your beloved dog or cat throughout its final moments, our team will escort you to a private room where you can say your goodbyes and hold your pet while he or she passes.

During the procedure, your veterinarian will give your pet a sedative to put them to sleep and then inject the medications that help your pet pass peacefully. Once your pet has passed, you will have the option to take your pet back home for burial, or we can help you send your pet to a place where he or she can be cremated, and you can retrieve the ash at a later date.

At-Home Pet Euthanasia

Many pet owners choose at-home pet euthanasia to help their pets become as comfortable as possible and in a familiar environment. The process for at-home pet euthanasia is essentially the same as at our clinic. The only significant difference is that our veterinarian brings the medications to your home to be administered.

Being at home also gives you the option of having your pet put to sleep either indoors or outdoors, depending on which you think your pet may prefer. Once the medication has been administered, and your pet has passed peacefully, you will be given time to grieve. When you and your family members are ready, your veterinarian can remove your pet from your home. We also offer cremation services.
